Areas of expertise

I specialise in radio and new media, and particularly in facilitating the use of online communications for community empowerment and development.  I work mainly freelance, in a wide range of roles, including as a project leader, trainer, producer, researcher, journalist and writer.

Career history - current media work

Career history - past media work

2005-2010 ~ Project Co-ordinator / Producer
Jellicoe-Neville Performing Arts
Website design and management, recording and CD production, publicity and marketing support for this Camden-based community arts organisation.

2001-2010 ~ Trainer
Women's Radio Group
Designing and delivering short radio production training courses, mainly for women, including at the Panjabi Centre in Southall.  Topics: interviewing, using portable recorders, digital editing and making short radio programmes, plus using computers and the internet as part of the skills needed for radio production.

Nov 2007-July 2009 ~ Project Co-ordinator
Women's Radio Group
Project management, administration, website and audio production on behalf of WRG for imMEDIAte: training women in media. This was a Grundtvig transnational Learning Partnership project with partners in Spain and Austria (led by Orange 94.0 FM in Vienna).

Carrying out information research/market analysis for a collaborative project to develop large-scale digital archive solutions, in which the BBC was a partner.

May-Oct 2006 ~ Initiator / Project Leader
Women's Radio Group
Project management, training, website and audio production for the Desi Radio Eco Team project, which I set up in partnership with Global Action Plan and The Panjabi Centre.

2005 ~ Project Co-ordinator / Producer
Hillwood Resource Centre (Age Concern Camden)
Recording, editing and project managing the collection of oral reminiscences, and the production of a CD and booklet, as part of a project for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of VE Day.

2003-2005 ~ Project co-ordinator and trainer
Women's Radio Group for Camden Community Radio
Project management, training and editorial guidance for this online community radio group during its early development.

2002 and 2004 ~ Project Manager/Producer
Women's Radio Group for Riverside FM
Radio production, website design/maintenance and project management for this short-term community radio station (broadcasting July 2002 and July 2004).

Training young migrants in radio production and helping them produce a programme, Radio Roma, for SYPC's short-term radio station Radio Underdog.

Tutoring the online project group for this partnership project between the BBC and Hammersmith & West London College.

I was the project co-ordinator for the launch of the BBC Diversity Database of contributors.

ON LINE/More Colour in the Media
Writing two handbooks on promoting diversity in the media for the ON LINE/More Colour in the Media transnational project based in Utrecht, Holland 

1993-1994 ~ Researcher/Writer

Researching arts broadcasting in London and producing the Directory of Arts Broadcasting for London, which provided information and support for artists and arts groups when contacting the media.

Part-time broadcaster at the BBC Travel Centre, London.

Interviewing, analysis and reporting on various research projects in the field of children and media, including (to 2006) work on the annual ChildWise Monitor Report

Qualitative and quantitative researcher, Special Projects, including the BBC Survey of Listening and Viewing in Schools.

1983-88 ~ Market Researcher
Freelance quantitative market researcher for the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB), for Mass Observation and for Marplan.

1972-1983 ~ Teacher 
I taught as a primary class teacher in London, Salford and Berlin; also in London as a French teacher at lower Secondary level.


My main interests are photography, film, music, gardening, 'slow' travel and cultural exchange.
